In a recent development, the University of Virginia is considering the possibility of quarterback Chandler Morris returning for an additional season in 2026. Head coach Tony Elliott stated on Wednesday that discussions have taken place regarding this potential move, though no final decision has been made. “There have been some talks with Chandler of possibly [pursuing an extra year],” Elliott noted, adding, “That’s still to be determined.”
Chandler Morris, who transferred to Virginia as a graduate student before the 2025 season, has had a diverse college football career. He initially played at Oklahoma in 2020, before spending time at TCU from 2021 to 2023 and at North Texas last year. If he participates in the 2026 season, it would mark his seventh year in college football.
Impact on the Team
This season, Morris has been a key player for the Cavaliers, amassing 2,586 yards passing and 248 yards rushing, while contributing to a total of 19 touchdowns (14 passing and 5 rushing). His performance has been instrumental in leading Virginia to its second-ever 10-win season and their first since 1989. The Cavaliers currently hold a record of 10-2 overall and 7-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). They are set to compete for their first outright conference title against Duke on Saturday evening.
Despite his achievements, Morris has faced challenges due to injuries that limited his participation in both the 2022 and 2023 seasons. As the team prepares for the future, Elliott mentioned that they are planning as if Morris will not return for another year. This includes bolstering their quarterback roster.
Recruitment and Future Plans
On the same day as national signing day, Virginia officially welcomed Ely Hamrick, a quarterback from Crest High School in Shelby, North Carolina, to their 2026 recruiting class. Hamrick’s early enrollment is expected to aid his development within the program. Virginia’s current quarterback depth chart also features Daniel Kaelin, a transfer from Nebraska, who has served as Morris’ backup this season. Kaelin is projected to be a redshirt sophomore in 2026.
Additionally, the Cavaliers have freshmen Cole Geer and Bjorn Jurgensen on the team, with Geer currently listed as the third-string quarterback. Coach Elliott emphasized the need to consistently recruit for the quarterback position, noting, “You’re going to have to recruit that position every single year because you only play one and guys are going to want opportunity.”
Another notable addition is Jae’Oyn Williams, an athlete from St. Frances Academy in Baltimore, Maryland. Williams, primarily recruited as a running back, will also have the chance to showcase his skills as a quarterback when he enrolls early in January.
As Virginia navigates its quarterback situation, all eyes will be on the developments regarding Morris’s potential return and how the new recruits will integrate into the team.
