argentina-unveils-isaac-accords-to-forge-stronger-ties-with-israel

Argentine President Javier Milei introduced the Isaac Accords, a strategic initiative aimed at enhancing political, economic, and cultural collaborations between Argentina, Israel, and other countries in Latin America. This framework, inspired by the earlier Abraham Accords, seeks to foster stronger ties in key sectors and build enduring diplomatic relationships. The initiative’s first phase will target Uruguay, Panama, and Costa Rica.

The announcement came after a meeting in Buenos Aires between Milei and Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, who is currently engaged in a regional tour to bolster diplomatic relations and coordinate collaborative projects across Latin America. During the meeting, Milei expressed Argentina’s commitment to being a “pioneer” alongside the United States in promoting this new regional framework focused on cooperation with Israel.

Milei emphasized that the Isaac Accords aim to deepen connections between Israel and Latin America, particularly highlighting cooperation in “national strategic sectors.” He described his election as “a double miracle, for Argentina and for the Jewish people,” showcasing his personal affinity for Judaism and Israel. Sa’ar noted this sentiment during their meeting, recalling a moment when he recited the Shehecheyanu blessing while placing a kippah on his head, prompting Milei to don a kippah he keeps in his office.

As part of the initial phase of the Isaac Accords, discussions are already underway regarding cooperation in technology, security, and economic development with the targeted Latin American countries. Diplomats involved in the negotiations aim to translate political alignment into structured regional programs, which could significantly enhance collaboration across these sectors.

The two leaders also addressed Argentina’s plan to relocate its embassy to Jerusalem. Sa’ar indicated they reviewed this move in detail, including preparations for a celebratory event expected in the spring of 2024. As they concluded their discussions, Milei expressed optimism about future engagements, telling Sa’ar, “See you soon in Jerusalem.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly acknowledged Milei’s efforts in a message shared on social media, commending the president’s “moral clarity, vision, and courage.” He expressed hope that the Isaac Accords would elevate bilateral relations “to new heights” in collaboration with U.S. leadership under former President Donald Trump.

Looking ahead, Argentina’s Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno is scheduled to visit Israel in February 2024 to advance the operational structure of the accords. Ambassador Axel Wahnish will oversee local implementation and outreach to regional partners, ensuring that the framework’s objectives are met effectively.

Since taking office, Milei has notably shifted Argentina’s diplomatic posture towards Israel. His remarks at a recent event commemorating 90 years of the Delegación de Asociaciones Israelitas Argentinas highlighted his commitment to supporting Israel against perceived threats to freedom. He stated, “The free world must rise against the threats to freedom that seek to reinstate themselves,” reiterating his administration’s resolve in strengthening ties with Israel.

Through the Isaac Accords, Argentina aims to not only enhance its bilateral relations with Israel but also to create a unified front with other Latin American nations in addressing common challenges and opportunities in the region.
