URGENT UPDATE: The National Weather Service has just issued a critical warning for Northern California, alerting residents to the threat of potentially deadly “sneaker waves” reaching heights of up to 18 feet. This warning is in effect until at least 10 p.m. on Sunday, October 15, 2023, and beachgoers are strongly advised to stay away from the shoreline.
These sneaker waves can strike without warning, catching surfers, tidepoolers, and casual beach visitors off guard. The NWS describes these waves as capable of running much farther up the beach than normal surf, putting those near the water at significant risk. High-risk areas include popular spots like Ocean Beach, various beaches in Santa Cruz County, and towns along the Pacifica peninsula.
Accompanying these enormous waves are treacherous rip currents, particularly around piers, jetties, and inlets. Authorities emphasize the urgency of this situation as conditions can change rapidly and dramatically.
In addition to the wave warnings, a buoy located off the coast of San Francisco has reported a chilling water temperature of 57 degrees Fahrenheit. Exposure to such cold water can lead to loss of dexterity within 15 minutes, and can be fatal within as little as one to six hours, according to experts from the University of Sea Kayaking.
Officials urge everyone to heed these warnings and refrain from entering the water. This is a developing situation, and beach safety is paramount. Stay tuned for real-time updates as conditions evolve throughout the day. Share this information widely to ensure the safety of all those in the area.
