In Sierra Vista, Arizona, the American Legion Post 52 has continued its tradition of offering free Thanksgiving meals to those in need, marking over two decades of community service. This year, the organization prepared to serve meals to an estimated 600 people over four days, showcasing its commitment to supporting local residents and active-duty soldiers.

Bobby Wise, the post commander, expressed optimism about the event, emphasizing the importance of being a resource for those facing challenges. “We always hope that people are doing well in our community, but sometimes there are some challenges. So I’m glad that we’re here to provide a little bit of a gap,” Wise stated. The post welcomed all members of the community, including military personnel in town for training and border missions.

Volunteers played a crucial role in the meal preparation and service. Longtime members Patty Masias and Wayne Blood participated for the first time this year. They noted the positive atmosphere, saying, “Everyone seems to be happy with what they’ve been served, and the line’s not getting any smaller.” Their enthusiasm reflected the spirit of giving that the American Legion embodies.

The meals served were made possible through donations and funds raised by the community. Wise highlighted the pride the American Legion takes in providing this service. “It’s almost expected of us, and it’s not a burden on us, because we want to give back,” he remarked. This dedication transforms the Legion into a welcoming space during the holiday, providing a sense of belonging for many.

As the day progressed, the atmosphere at the Legion became one of camaraderie and shared experience. Wise reiterated the organization’s role as a cornerstone of the community, stating, “The American Legion has always been part of this community. It’s kind of a cornerstone to always give back to not only the veterans themselves, but their families.”

The American Legion Post 52 continues to be a vital resource for Sierra Vista, providing not only meals but also a sense of community and support during the Thanksgiving holiday. This commitment to service underscores the organization’s mission to honor veterans while fostering connections within the broader community.
