More than 1,000 families in the Greater Lowell area received Thanksgiving meals through a collaborative effort led by the United Way and the Dwelling House of Hope on November 22, 2023. This initiative aimed to ensure that every family has the opportunity to enjoy a festive meal during the holiday season.
At the distribution event held at the Dwelling House of Hope headquarters, which occupies a former church hall, volunteers assisted families as cars lined up down Mount Hope Street. Marie Elianor, a senior director at United Way, emphasized the importance of the occasion, stating, “Every family deserves a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner.” Her co-leader for the day, Levenia Furusa, the executive director of Dwelling House of Hope, echoed this sentiment as they welcomed families.
As vehicles approached, volunteers organized the cars, guiding them into a single file for the meal distribution. Nearly 50 volunteers gathered to support the mission, demonstrating a strong community spirit despite the chilly, rainy weather. Many of these volunteers had previously participated in similar events, feeling a deep sense of fulfillment in giving back.
One notable volunteer, Jose De Jesús Cervantes, who previously ran for City Council in District 7, expressed his dedication to serving the community. He remarked, “I ran to serve. I can’t stop serving because I lost.” His commitment reflects the broader ethos of the event, where community members came together to support those in need.
Competitors for a state Senate seat, Rodney Elliott and Vanna Howard, also joined in the effort, working alongside each other as they distributed meals. Their participation highlighted a shared commitment to community service that transcended political rivalry.
The distribution began at 07:00 and continued until noon. As the event progressed, families received bags filled with turkey and all the traditional fixings. Notably, some families chose only fresh produce, which was also available during the sign-up period. For those who did not pre-register, the volunteers ensured no one went home empty-handed, providing them with chicken if turkey was unavailable.
By midday, an impressive stack of empty boxes stood against the building, a testament to the success of the distribution. Though the line of vehicles began to dwindle, many families opted to visit additional distribution points set up in a nearby parking lot, where other social service agencies and churches were also providing Thanksgiving meals.
According to Marie Elianor, this event marks the 26th year that United Way has organized Thanksgiving meals. What began as a small initiative serving ten families in Boston has expanded dramatically, now reaching over 10,000 families across 19 communities. The event in Lowell stands out as one of the largest in this effort.
Elianor expressed gratitude for the partnerships formed with organizations like the Dwelling House of Hope and various social service agencies. This collaboration not only addresses immediate needs but also promotes long-term community well-being.
The Dwelling House of Hope actively works to combat food insecurity, homelessness, and substance abuse, striving to uplift the community through its various programs. This Thanksgiving event is a vital part of that mission, showcasing the power of community solidarity and compassion during the holiday season.
