Kathleen Ann Giacalone, a cherished educator and community member, passed away peacefully on November 16, 2025, at the age of 88. Her death marks a significant loss for her family and the many lives she touched throughout her long career as an elementary school teacher.
Born on April 24, 1937, in San Pedro, California, Kathleen was the daughter of Vincent and Antoinette Vitalich. She later moved to Lomita with her husband, Rosario (Jack) Giacalone, where they built their life together.
A Lifelong Commitment to Education
Kathleen dedicated 39 years of her life to teaching, inspiring countless children during her tenure. Her passion for education extended beyond the classroom, as she often engaged with her students’ families and participated in community events. After retiring, she embraced her love for travel, exploring new places and cultures.
Survived by her husband Jack, daughter ToniLynn (Tomo) Meek, son Paul (Kelly) Giacalone, and her four grandchildren—Tommy, Anthony, Jacquelyn, and Gianna—Kathleen leaves behind a legacy of love and commitment to family. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, who will fondly remember her warm spirit.
Honoring a Life Well-Lived
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Kathleen’s name to several organizations that reflect her values, including Shriners Children’s, St. Jude’s Research Hospital, Disabled American Veterans, and the San Pedro Peninsula Cancer Guild. These contributions will honor her memory and support causes she deeply cared about.
A Funeral Mass will be held on December 2, 2025, at Mary Star of the Sea Church at 10:30 a.m.. Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance of a remarkable woman who touched so many lives through her kindness, dedication, and love for teaching.
