UPDATE: Kansas Jayhawks’ rising star, Darryn Peterson, is making significant progress toward a comeback, according to head coach Bill Self. Following the Jayhawks’ 69-59 victory over Notre Dame at the Players Era Festival in Las Vegas on November 20, 2023, Self revealed that the projected No. 1 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft is actively working out and may return soon.

Peterson, a 6-foot-6 wing, has been sidelined since injuring himself during a game against North Carolina on November 7. Although he was ruled out for the current games in Las Vegas, Self expressed optimism about Peterson’s recovery. “He’s doing more every day. He’s running, he’s cutting,” Self stated. “We’ll re-evaluate every three or four days.”

In his brief appearance this season, Peterson has averaged an impressive 21.5 points per game and demonstrated his shooting prowess with a 50% success rate from beyond the arc. His absence has been felt, but the Jayhawks have managed to maintain a 3-1 record without him.

While the team hopes for Peterson’s quick return, they are facing additional challenges. Senior guard Jayden Dawson sustained a wrist injury during warmups prior to the game against Notre Dame, limiting his play to just four minutes. Self confirmed that x-rays are pending and Dawson is likely doubtful for the remaining games in Las Vegas.

“There are no excuses. We definitely have to figure out who we are without him,” said Bryson Tiller, who contributed 17 points and 9 rebounds against Notre Dame. “He’ll be back soon for sure. We’ve got to be the tougher team each night.”

Kansas will face Syracuse next, and the team’s depth will be tested as they navigate these injury challenges. Fans are eager for updates on Peterson’s status, which could significantly impact the Jayhawks’ performance as they aim to solidify their position in the upcoming season.

Stay tuned for the latest updates as the situation develops, and watch for Peterson’s imminent return to the court.
