openai-blocked-from-using-cameo-in-sora-app-until-december-22

BREAKING: A federal judge has just issued an urgent ruling blocking OpenAI from using the term “cameo” in its Sora video app, a significant setback for the AI company. US District Judge Eumi K. Lee has mandated that OpenAI must cease using the term until December 22, following a trademark infringement lawsuit filed by Cameo, the personalized video company.

The ruling affects a core feature of the Sora app, which allows users to create personalized video links for themselves, their pets, or even objects, dubbed “cameos.” The lawsuit, initiated on October 28, claims that OpenAI’s use of the term infringes on Cameo’s federally registered trademark.

Judge Lee noted in her ruling that OpenAI is “likely infringing” on Cameo’s trademark. The judge emphasized that OpenAI’s argument against the injunction—that it would harm their ability to launch Sora—does not hold weight because the harm arises from their own potential trademark violation.

Cameo CEO Steven Galanis has called for OpenAI to comply with the ruling “ASAP” to prevent further damage to Cameo’s brand and intellectual property. In a post on X, he highlighted the urgency of the situation, stating, “30% of all @BookCameo videos get created between Thanksgiving and Christmas, so time is of the essence.”

As of late Monday morning, OpenAI continued to use “cameo” on the Sora app, prompting concerns about compliance with the court’s order. An OpenAI spokesperson expressed their disagreement with the assertion that exclusive ownership of the word “cameo” could be claimed, indicating they plan to continue their legal battle.

A hearing has been scheduled for December 19 to determine whether the temporary restraining order will be made permanent. This development raises questions about the future of OpenAI’s Sora app and its brand strategy moving forward.

Stay tuned for updates as this situation unfolds, impacting both OpenAI’s operations and Cameo’s brand integrity in the busy holiday season.
