Glenville High School’s football team has secured a spot in the OHSAA Division IV state semifinals, thanks in part to standout receiver Joseph Saffold. In a decisive 35-7 victory over Perry on November 22, 2025, Saffold showcased his skills with a remarkable 57-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Arvell Nelson, contributing significantly to Glenville’s success this season.

Saffold’s performance this season has been impressive, with a total of 704 yards and 10 touchdowns on 32 receptions, surpassing his previous year’s statistics at St. Edward, where he tallied 684 yards and five touchdowns. This achievement marks his fourth consecutive appearance in the state semifinals, a testament to his consistency and skill on the field.

Building Connections and Achievements

The journey to this point has not been without its challenges. Saffold transferred to Glenville from St. Edward after three years, where he made a name for himself as a reliable receiver. His decision to join Glenville was influenced by his father’s trust in coach Ted Ginn Sr., who has provided guidance and support since Saffold’s arrival. “I’m happy with the move, for sure,” Saffold stated, emphasizing his commitment to contribute to the team.

The connection between Saffold and his teammates, particularly with C.J. Newell, has been a vital part of their success. After inviting Newell to a seven-on-seven tournament in Houston, the two players forged a strong bond that has translated into on-field chemistry. Newell remarked, “Joe shows up. He works every day,” highlighting Saffold’s dedication and work ethic.

Glenville’s team, known as the Tarblooders, boasts a 10-3 record this season and will face the defending state champion, Gnadenhutten Indian Valley, in the semifinals next week at a location yet to be determined by the OHSAA. The anticipation is palpable as the team aims for a third state championship in four years.

Future Prospects

As Saffold’s performance continues to draw attention, several colleges are showing interest, including institutions from the Mid-American Conference, as well as Howard University, Pennsylvania, and Yale. Coach Ginn has commented on Saffold’s talent, suggesting he remains under-recruited despite his evident abilities.

Standing at 6 feet and weighing 170 pounds, Saffold’s background adds depth to his story. Originally from Florida, he moved to Cleveland before entering high school, where he has continued to excel in football. His previous experiences have shaped him into a competitive player who thrives in challenging environments.

Reflecting on his time with Glenville, Saffold expressed his gratitude for the strong sense of community within the team. “It’s like a whole different vibe,” he said, noting how quickly he felt welcomed. With the state semifinals ahead, the Tarblooders are eager to make their mark and continue their pursuit of championship glory.
