UPDATE: Right-handed pitcher Tatsuya Imai has officially entered Major League Baseball’s posting system, making him available for teams to sign as a free agent starting today through January 2, 2024. This is a critical opportunity for MLB teams seeking to enhance their rosters with international talent.

Imai, a standout 27-year-old from Japan, concluded his season with an impressive record of 10-5 and a remarkable 1.92 ERA while playing for the Seibu Lions in the Pacific League. He demonstrated exceptional skill by striking out 178 batters over 163.2 innings, showcasing his potential to make a significant impact in the majors.

This posting period coincides with the deadline for Munetaka Murakami, another talented Japanese player, who must sign by December 22. Teams are racing against the clock to secure these talents, with Imai’s impressive track record drawing considerable attention.

Throughout his eight seasons with Seibu, Imai has compiled a solid career record of 58-45 and a 3.15 ERA, with a total of 907 strikeouts across 963.2 innings. His accolades include being a three-time All-Star and achieving a notable milestone by pitching eight innings in a combined no-hitter against Fukuoka on April 18. Moreover, he set a new franchise record by striking out 17 batters against Yokohama on June 17, surpassing the previous record held by Daisuke Matsuzaka.

Under the terms of MLB’s posting agreement with Nippon Professional Baseball, the posting fee for Imai will be 20% of the first $25 million of any contract, decreasing to 17.5% for the next $25 million and 15% for any amount exceeding $50 million. Additionally, a supplemental fee of 15% applies to any earned bonuses or escalators.

As teams scramble to finalize their rosters for the upcoming season, Imai’s availability marks a pivotal moment for MLB franchises looking to bolster their pitching staff. With the clock ticking towards the January 2 deadline, scouts and executives will be closely monitoring developments.

Stay tuned for updates on which teams will make a move for Imai as the signing window closes. The pressure is on, and the stakes could not be higher as teams prepare for a competitive season ahead.
