The launch of this resource comes as food pantries across the state experience unprecedented demand due to rising grocery prices and declining benefits from the Supplemental Food Nutrition Assistance Program. According to data from the national nonprofit Feeding America, approximately one in eight Mainers, translating to around 180,000 people, faces food insecurity, the highest rate in New England. This troubling statistic encompasses nearly 45,000 children who are at risk of hunger.

The Maine Food Access Map is designed to address the urgent need for accessible food resources. In a statement, Amanda Beal, Commissioner of the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry, emphasized the importance of this tool, stating, “We know that too many Maine people struggle to find nutritious food, and the new Maine Food Access Map is designed to meet this real and growing need.” By consolidating various hunger-relief resources into one user-friendly platform, the map aims to help individuals and families connect with assistance more efficiently.
