The United Arab Emirates announced a significant expansion to its airline fleet with a deal valued at $38 billion for the purchase of 65 Boeing 777-9 passenger jets. This announcement was made during the Dubai Airshow, which showcases advancements in aviation and defense and attracts thousands of attendees from around the globe. With this acquisition, Emirates Airline will increase its total fleet of Boeing planes to 270, reinforcing its position as the largest operator of the Boeing 777 series.
The deal comes as Emirates aims to meet the increasing demand for air travel in the region, aligning with broader growth plans for Dubai. HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, chairman and chief executive of Emirates Airline and Group, emphasized the strategic nature of the order, stating, “Each of our aircraft on order have been carefully factored into Emirates’ growth plan, which is aligned to Dubai’s growth plans.”
The Dubai Airshow is known for its vibrant atmosphere and includes military aircraft demonstrations alongside exhibitions from various aviation industry vendors. This year’s event highlights not only commercial aviation growth but also advancements in emerging technologies such as flying taxis, which Dubai plans to incorporate into its transportation system by next year.
Boeing’s recent challenges have included delays in the deliveries of the 777X jets, which have now been pushed to 2027 due to certification issues. Despite these setbacks, Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg expressed optimism, stating the company is making progress in stabilizing its airplane production after facing numerous lawsuits and supply chain complications during the pandemic.
In the context of the competitive airline market, the deal is particularly notable following a substantial order from Qatar Airways in May 2025, which amounted to $96 billion for hundreds of jets. Such orders reflect the robust recovery of the aviation sector as global travel demand rebounds post-pandemic.
