UPDATE: Newly released polling data reveals that 69% of Americans support Zohran Mamdani‘s proposal to raise taxes on millionaires and corporations, marking a significant moment for the newly elected mayor of New York City. This finding comes just days after Mamdani’s victory in a closely watched election against former Governor Andrew Cuomo and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa.
The YouGov poll, conducted from November 5 to 8 with 1,133 adult respondents, indicates that Mamdani’s progressive agenda resonates broadly across the nation. The mayor-elect’s proposals, which include raising taxes on the wealthy and corporations, are seen as a bold step in addressing economic inequality.
Among the most popular proposals, 66% of respondents expressed support for providing free childcare for children under five years old, while 65% favored freezing rent for lower-income tenants. Even more controversial ideas, such as increasing the minimum wage to $30 by 2030, garnered support from 56% of those surveyed.
Mamdani’s plan to open city-run grocery stores also found favor, with 57% backing the initiative, despite skepticism from some in the business community. Although the proposal to permanently eliminate bus fares was the least popular, it still received support from a majority, with 53% of respondents in favor.
The poll results signal a shift in public sentiment, especially as big-name billionaires who opposed Mamdani during the campaign are now expressing hopes for his success as mayor. This newfound support reflects a potential change in dynamics between progressive policies and corporate interests.
Mamdani is set to be officially sworn in on January 1, 2026, and with these polling numbers, he may arrive at City Hall with a mandate to implement his ambitious agenda.
As Mamdani prepares to take office, all eyes will be on how he navigates the challenges ahead, particularly in implementing policies that have widespread support among the electorate. His success could pave the way for similar proposals to be adopted in other cities.
Stay tuned for more updates as Mamdani’s administration takes shape and begins to address the pressing issues facing New Yorkers and beyond.
