Roblox has implemented a sweeping moderation measure that has resulted in the unexpected reset of numerous usernames containing the number “69.” Players reported that their usernames were forcibly changed to generic placeholders without prior warning, leaving many confused and frustrated. This action appears to be one of the most significant username purges in the platform’s history.
The moderation crackdown began a few days ago, with users on forums like r/RobloxHelp sharing their experiences. One user, Protons, detailed receiving a notification stating, “Your username or display name was found to be inappropriate and has been changed to a placeholder.” Their username, “LXIX_Arlz69,” had been in use for a lengthy period without issue, raising questions about the sudden enforcement of this policy.
Other players quickly confirmed similar experiences. False-Ad2856 shared their own reset, stating, “I got the exact same thing but at 6:50 am and I also have 69 in my username.” Another user, GalletiUwU, reported their account with “iBlitz69” was reset as well. It became evident that those affected shared the commonality of having “69” in their usernames.
Complaints have also emerged on social media platforms. A user identified as kzed_00 lamented the loss of their username, which they had maintained for nine years. Another user, Ven, expressed their dismay, stating, “@Roblox why is my username and account just now getting banned after I’ve had this account for 11 years… all because I made a username when I was little that had the numbers 69 in it.” Such sentiments highlight the emotional connection many players have with their online identities.
While users were not banned from playing, they faced the challenge of being renamed to generic placeholders and were granted a free username change. Yet, some encountered technical issues when attempting to select a new name. One user, identified as “69Valen69,” reported being unable to access the settings page to change their username, getting trapped in a loop where the system prompted them to change it but failed to allow access.
The scale of this moderation action is significant. A user on X, known as Zenha, estimated that millions of accounts may have been affected. They noted that Roblox appeared to reset nearly every account with “69” in the username, regardless of context. If their estimate holds true, tens of millions of accounts could be involved, marking this as potentially the largest username reset in Roblox history.
The decision to target usernames containing “69” has sparked debate among players. Many raised concerns about Roblox’s moderation priorities, especially given the platform’s history of dealing with genuine safety issues. One user remarked, “I almost got banned from Roblox for having 69 in my name, but they refuse to ban predators.” Such statements highlight a growing frustration regarding the perceived inconsistency in the platform’s enforcement policies.
This moderation wave follows a recent issue with Roblox’s facial recognition system, which misclassified users’ ages—adults were incorrectly categorized as under 13, while minors were placed in 18+ categories. With broken age verification and widespread username resets, trust in Roblox’s automated systems is currently under scrutiny.
Some users attempted to appeal their resets, with mixed results. Forsaken-Ad3505 reported successfully reclaiming their original username, while another user, hammerthebest, noted the futility of appealing since “69 isn’t allowed on Roblox.” This inconsistency in enforcement raises further questions about the clarity of the platform’s policies.
Despite the frustrations, there is a small silver lining: username changes typically cost 1,000 Robux (approximately $10), but affected players received a free reset. Protons commented that they were able to change their name without incurring any charges, though this does little to alleviate the dissatisfaction surrounding the unexpected resets.
As of now, Roblox has not publicly addressed the recent username resets linked to the presence of “69.” The community remains engaged, sharing their experiences and awaiting further clarification from the platform.
