URGENT UPDATE: Starting November 3, 2023, 40 U.S. airports will face a 10% reduction in flights due to ongoing air traffic control delays linked to the federal government shutdown. This drastic measure could impact up to 1,800 flights, equating to approximately 268,000 seats being cut, according to aviation analytics firm Cirium.
The shutdown has led to severe staffing shortages within the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), causing significant delays and even temporary airport closures. Major hubs including Atlanta, Charlotte, Boston, Seattle, and Philadelphia have confirmed service reductions, exacerbating travel chaos as the busy holiday season approaches.
Travelers should brace for disruptions as the FAA has not yet released a comprehensive list of affected airports. However, Cirium has identified key airports likely to be impacted, including:
“Chicago O’Hare International Airport, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, and Los Angeles International Airport.”
Industry experts are warning travelers to prepare for long lines and potential delays. “If you’re checking bags, plan for longer waits at the airport,” advised Audrey Kohout, Co-CEO of luggage shipping companies LuggageForward and LugLess. “Pack any valuables or time-sensitive items in your carry-on.”
As airlines scramble to adjust their schedules, some major carriers are already informing customers of potential changes. Frontier Airlines indicated that most flights will continue as scheduled but will keep travelers updated. United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby noted that reductions will primarily affect regional routes and domestic flights not connecting major hubs.
Cirium’s data suggests that if Chicago O’Hare is included in the cuts, it could see as many as 121 flights canceled across all airlines, while Atlanta may face 104 cancellations due to its role as a Delta hub.
Travelers are encouraged to monitor flight statuses closely and consider backup plans. Airlines like American, Delta, Frontier, and United are offering flexible change and refund options for affected passengers. Southwest Airlines has also announced that passengers whose flights are canceled will be eligible for refunds.
With the Thanksgiving and Christmas travel seasons just around the corner, the timing of these reductions raises significant concerns for holiday travelers. As the situation develops, customers should stay vigilant and prepared for changes to their travel plans.
This is a developing story. Updates will follow as more information becomes available.
