adl-warns-nyc-mayor-elect-mamdani-is-a-clear-danger-now

UPDATE: The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has issued an urgent warning regarding newly elected New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, labeling him a “clear and present danger” to the Jewish community. ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt made these alarming statements on the Brian Kilmeade Show shortly after Mamdani’s victory was confirmed on October 31, 2023.

In an interview, Greenblatt emphasized the deep concern among New Yorkers, stating, “Hundreds of thousands of Jewish New Yorkers are alarmed, and that anxiety is well-placed.” Mamdani, a 34-year-old former state assemblyman from Queens, triumphed over former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa in a fiercely contested election.

Greenblatt highlighted Mamdani’s past remarks that have been interpreted as antisemitic, including his refusal to condemn the slogan “globalize the intifada,” a phrase often associated with anti-Israel protests. Greenblatt stated, “This mayor-elect has said things and committed to do things that may very well make this environment even more unsafe for Jewish New Yorkers.”

The ADL has reacted swiftly, launching multiple initiatives to combat potential antisemitism. Greenblatt announced the establishment of a tip line for New Yorkers to report incidents of antisemitism, saying, “If New Yorkers experience antisemitism, where they work or worship, tell us at ADL and we will make sure that the authorities follow up.”

Mamdani has also faced backlash for posing with Imam Siraj Wahhaj, who has a controversial history linked to the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. This connection has intensified scrutiny of Mamdani’s character and intentions.

In response to the growing concerns, the ADL has introduced the “Mamdani Monitor,” aimed at tracking the new mayor’s appointments and policies to ensure accountability. “We are going to hold this guy accountable,” vowed Greenblatt, signaling the ADL’s commitment to vigilance in the wake of Mamdani’s election.

Mamdani has consistently denied accusations of antisemitism, insisting his critiques are directed at the Israeli government rather than Jewish individuals. He has previously declared intentions to pursue legal actions against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should he enter New York City.

With Mamdani now in office, the city is bracing for potential changes that could impact community relations. Greenblatt’s statements underscore a growing unease among Jewish New Yorkers, highlighting the human impact of political rhetoric and leadership.

As New York City navigates this new political landscape, all eyes will be on Mamdani’s administration. What happens next could redefine the city’s approach to antisemitism and community safety. The ADL is urging vigilance and reporting, reinforcing their role as watchdogs during this critical period.
