A significant milestone has been reached in a long-standing nitrous oxide (N2O) abatement project at Covestro’s facility in Baytown, Texas. ClimeCo, a leader in decarbonization, and Covestro announced on November 5, 2025, that the project has surpassed the issuance of 10 million carbon credits, equivalent to approximately 10 million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) abated since its inception in December 2010.

The initiative aims to eliminate nitrous oxide emissions directly at their source. Victor Ortega, Baytown Site Manager and Senior Vice President of Performance Materials & Operations North America at Covestro, emphasized the project’s importance, stating, “Covestro’s abatement efforts on our nitric acid unit eliminate nitrous oxide at its source and create permanent and irreversible emissions reductions.” He noted that nitrous oxide possesses a global warming potential 273 times greater than CO2, highlighting the environmental significance of this project.

Over its operational lifespan, the N2O abatement project has successfully eliminated more than 36,000 metric tonnes of N2O emissions. This reduction is comparable to removing more than 2.3 million gas-powered vehicles from the road for one year, according to the Climate Action Reserve’s (CAR) N2O Abatement Protocol. CAR is recognized for its role in ensuring integrity and transparency in global carbon markets.

Michael Griffin, General Manager of LSB Industries, which operates the nitric acid plant at the Covestro Baytown site, acknowledged the collaborative effort, stating, “This has been a great collaborative effort by Covestro, ClimeCo, and our entire LSB Baytown team.” He expressed pride in the accomplishments supporting Covestro’s decarbonization goals and enthusiasm for potential future opportunities.

As the project enters its 15th year, it remains one of the longest-running and most impactful industrial N2O abatement initiatives in the United States. By permanently destroying the super pollutant at the point of generation, it prevents harmful emissions from entering the atmosphere.

Erika Schiller, Senior Vice President of Project Development at ClimeCo, expressed pride in the partnership, stating, “We are proud to work alongside Covestro and LSB as they continue their incredible sustainability journey.” ClimeCo, as the largest developer of N2O abatement projects in the U.S., aims to set the standard for high-integrity, impactful climate solutions that also deliver business value.

The most recent carbon credits issued from Covestro’s Baytown project are now available for purchase. For inquiries, interested parties may contact Dan Linsky, Senior Vice President of Voluntary Environmental Commodities.
