New York City is set to implement a pioneering initiative aimed at enhancing school safety across its public schools. The new program integrates the city’s public schools with the 911 emergency response system, enabling rapid deployment during critical situations such as active shooter incidents. This pilot program, announced by the city administration, will begin in the 2025-2026 school year and will initially encompass 51 schools throughout the five boroughs, starting with the Spring Creek campus in Brooklyn.
The Emergency Alert System (EAS) allows school personnel to activate a direct call to 911 within ten seconds using multiple fixed buttons and wireless lanyards. This system bypasses the standard call routing, ensuring immediate dispatch of emergency services. Additionally, the EAS will provide audio and visual notifications to alert students and faculty that an emergency has been declared and that the school is on lockdown.
The initiative underscores the administration’s commitment to creating a safe educational environment for students, parents, and staff. The city’s leadership emphasizes that a secure atmosphere is essential for effective learning and teaching. According to officials, “Our students must be able to feel safe in school so they can focus on their studies.”

Since taking office nearly four years ago, the administration has successfully removed over 24,300 illegal guns from city streets. As a result of these efforts, shooting incidents have decreased by 55 percent, and homicides have dropped by 36.5 percent compared to previous years. Notably, in October 2025, major crimes across the city fell by 6.5 percent, reinforcing New York City’s position as the safest large city in America.
The introduction of the EAS is a significant step toward bolstering the security framework of schools, an area deemed crucial for the safety of the community.
