Lowell C. Van Berkom, a respected toxicologist and devoted family man, passed away peacefully on October 24, 2025, at the age of 89 in Lino Lakes, Minnesota. Surrounded by his loved ones, Van Berkom leaves behind a remarkable legacy in both his professional and personal life.
Born into a close-knit family, Van Berkom graduated in 1954 from North Dakota State University with a degree in pharmacy. He began his career managing Frank’s Pharmacy in Powers Lake, North Dakota. Following a devastating fire that destroyed the pharmacy in 1964, he returned to NDSU to pursue a master’s degree in toxicology, graduating in 1968.
After completing his education, Van Berkom joined the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) Forensic Science Laboratory as a toxicologist. He played a pivotal role in establishing the breath alcohol program, which became a cornerstone of forensic toxicology in the state. His tenure at the BCA culminated in his retirement as Director in 1998. Post-retirement, he continued to contribute to the field as a consultant in forensic toxicology.
In 1961, Van Berkom married his long-time sweetheart, Leanne. Together, they raised a family of five children, instilling values of love and community in their household. The couple shared a passion for travel, frequently visiting destinations around the globe. Their annual trips to Cancun and summers at Pelican Lake were cherished traditions that brought joy to their family.
Van Berkom is remembered not only for his professional achievements but also for his dedication to his family. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Beth Zeilinger, and several siblings. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Leanne; children, Jonathan (Susan), Michael (Lesley), Craig (Anne), and Christy (Bret) Partington; as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Friends and family are invited to pay their respects during visitation on November 2, 2025, from 16:00 to 19:00 at Bradshaw, located at 4600 Greenhaven Dr., White Bear. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 on November 3 at Incarnation Lutheran Church, 4880 Hodgson Rd, Shoreview, with visitation beginning one hour prior. Interment will take place at Incarnation Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Van Berkom’s impact on the field of forensic toxicology and the lives of those around him will be felt for generations. His dedication to his family, profession, and community serves as a testament to a life well-lived.
