BREAKING: Warner Bros. Discovery’s iconic Looney Tunes are experiencing an unexpected revival on the free streaming service Tubi. After the studio transferred nearly 800 shorts to Tubi in August 2023, including 200 episodes withheld due to “cultural sensitivities,” the beloved characters are now among the platform’s top performers.
According to a recent report by Vulture, Tubi’s acquisition head, Samuel Harowitz, described the addition of Looney Tunes as “a huge win for us.” The series is now ranking in the Top 10 best-performing series on Tubi, attracting a wide range of viewers across all ages and demographics. The renewed interest in classic animation is evident, with Looney Tunes joining other fan-favorites like Tom & Jerry and The Flinstones, which also thrive on the platform.
Tubi is actively pursuing a long-term deal with Warner Bros. Discovery to keep the Looney Tunes on their service. Harowitz confirmed that negotiations are underway, aiming to secure the beloved cartoons “for quite a while, likely years.” The streaming platform is also open to potentially licensing new Looney Tunes content, including the much-anticipated Coyote vs. Acme, although no discussions have been initiated yet.
While the episodes currently available on Tubi are presented in a non-chronological order with ads playing between shorts, they are restored in high definition, thanks to the work of animation historian Jerry Beck. Beck noted that his restorations make the episodes “look day-one brand new, as the Looney Tunes should.” He expressed his delight at the renewed visibility for the series, stating, “I’m kind of glad [WBD] took them off HBO Max and allowed other networks to use them so we can all see them.”
The resurgence of Looney Tunes on Tubi illustrates the power of nostalgia and the enduring popularity of classic animation. With the platform’s commitment to preserving and showcasing these beloved characters, fans can expect to see more of their favorite shorts in the future.
