The community is mourning the loss of David Wesley Angel, who passed away on October 16, 2025, at the age of 86. David, a beloved husband and father, was remembered for his adventurous spirit and deep love for his family. Born on October 2, 1939, in Hinton, Oklahoma, he was the youngest of four siblings in the Porter family, which included his parents, Bessie and Jessie.
In 1941, David and his family relocated to Chula Vista, California. There, he formed lasting friendships while attending local schools, proudly cheering for the Spartans. David’s adventurous nature led him to enlist in the U.S. Air Force, where he completed his training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. His military journey began at Westover Air Force Base in Chicopee, Massachusetts, where a chance encounter at a surprise birthday party introduced him to Lorraine, his future wife. This serendipitous moment marked the beginning of a remarkable 63-year partnership filled with love and family.
David and Lorraine settled in San Diego, California, where they raised three children: Kristen, Kelly, and Jon David. David dedicated much of his professional life to the Department of Defense at the Coronado Naval Base. Seeking a balance between work and family, he opted for early retirement in his 40s, allowing him to spend more time outdoors and with loved ones.
In 1992, the couple moved to Magalia, California, desiring a more rural lifestyle. Despite their move, their children eventually followed them, creating a close-knit family unit in Northern California. Throughout his life, David remained a devoted fan of the San Diego Padres and Chargers, demonstrating his enduring connection to his roots.
David was a man of few words, with a calm presence that left an impression on everyone he met. His curiosity about the natural world was evident, especially in his love for reptiles and insects. He and Lorraine gained recognition at the San Diego Zoo for successfully hatching two king snakes, one of which lived for over twenty years. His diverse range of pets included a skunk, rats, cats, desert tortoises, and dogs.
A passionate outdoor enthusiast, David volunteered with the Eagle Scouts and participated in numerous outdoor activities. Notably, he embarked on a ten-day backpacking trip to climb Mt. Whitney, California’s highest peak, where he fondly remembered catching and cooking three trout for his companions. His love for jogging and biking was evident, as he completed several 5 km runs and a half marathon, while also enjoying long bike rides with Lorraine every Sunday.
David was also a skilled craftsman, dedicating time to woodworking. His perfectionism and creativity resulted in beautiful pieces of furniture and other items, which he lovingly gifted to family and friends.
David is survived by his wife, Lorraine, and their children: Kristen, who is married to Mariam; Kelly, who is married to David; and Jon David. He leaves behind grandsons Zach, who is married to Ariel; Garrett; and Noah, along with great-grandsons Anthony David and Kyler, great-granddaughter Kaylynn, and numerous nieces and nephews.
His legacy of love and adventure will continue to resonate within the hearts of those he touched. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to PBS or Audubon in David’s memory, honoring his passion for nature and education.
