A new era for the beloved Harry Potter franchise begins with a fresh cast voicing the iconic characters in an upcoming Audible adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s series. This innovative project features young actors Frankie Treadaway, Max Lester, and Arabella Stanton as Harry, Ron, and Hermione, respectively. The first audiobook, “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” is set to be released on November 4, 2023, showcasing a full ensemble cast rather than a single narrator.
The recording sessions took place in a London studio, where the young actors contributed to the background noise, often referred to as “walla,” to enhance the storytelling experience. This adaptation distinguishes itself from previous versions by incorporating a high-profile cast, featuring notable names such as Hugh Laurie as Albus Dumbledore, Riz Ahmed as Professor Snape, and Michelle Gomez as Professor McGonagall.
While the legacy of Harry Potter has faced challenges due to controversies surrounding Rowling’s comments on gender issues, production on new projects within the wizarding universe continues unabated. The new audiobooks aim to rekindle interest and invite both new and seasoned fans into the magical world.
Young Voices Bring Magic to Life
The excitement was palpable as Treadaway, Lester, and Stanton shared their experiences recording the audiobooks. The actors expressed their enthusiasm for becoming part of a story that has captivated audiences globally. Treadaway, 14, remarked on the immersive nature of the studio experience, stating, “You really got a taste of what it was going to be like, also in the studio and even the scenes.”
Lester, 13, highlighted the professionalism of the project, noting, “I did some audio before, yeah, but nothing as professional as this is.” Stanton, who also plays Hermione in the upcoming HBO series, shared her eagerness to portray such a beloved character. “I can’t say much, because they’ve cast a Mimblewimble tongue-tying spell on me,” she joked about the confidentiality surrounding the production.
The recording sessions were not only about the lines but also about the atmosphere. The trio mentioned the studio’s snack provisions, including a dedicated chocolate fridge, which helped keep their energy up during long hours of recording. “They have to restock every time I go,” Treadaway quipped.
A Passion for the Wizarding World
As they reflected on their introductions to the Harry Potter universe, each actor shared personal stories about discovering the books and films. Stanton recounted her journey starting at age eight, saying, “My friends had started reading all the books… so I thought I would start reading them too.” Lester found his inspiration in a bestseller at a local bookstore, describing it as “great.”
The actors expressed a deep connection to their characters. Treadaway found parallels between himself and Harry, mentioning, “Sometimes you’re the smaller person in the room and you just mingle.” Stanton shared her affinity for Hermione’s love of books, stating, “I love writing, I love reading… books are the main connection between Hermione and me.” Lester noted their shared cheeky nature, emphasizing their bravery in standing up for friends.
Stanton’s excitement extended to the spells she would be voicing, anticipating the sound effects that accompany them. “I can’t wait to hear the sounds of people casting them,” she said enthusiastically. Treadaway echoed this sentiment, expressing interest in how the battle scenes would sound in the final product. “I think that will sound really cinematic,” he added.
As the release date approaches, the young actors are keenly aware of the global interest in the Harry Potter series. Treadaway articulated a sense of pride in being associated with such a significant franchise. “It gives you a little feeling inside your heart,” he shared.
The new Audible adaptations aim not only to entertain but also to breathe new life into the Harry Potter saga, welcoming a fresh generation of fans while rekindling the magic for long-time followers. With its innovative approach and talented cast, this project promises to deliver a captivating auditory experience that celebrates the timeless stories penned by J.K. Rowling.
