The LAFD Fire Commission previously labeled the after-action document a “roadmap for change,” but Park argues it fails to address critical questions. “The after-action report raises a lot of questions,” she stated, emphasizing the need for explanation on resource allocation, especially following the Lachman Fire just days prior on January 1. “Why weren’t more resources deployed or staged in the area knowing that we had just had a fire on January 1 and rekindle activity?”
Park’s concerns highlight a significant oversight, as the Lachman Fire was not included in the analysis of the Palisades incident. She continued, “It’s hard to answer the questions without taking the Lachman Fire into account,” expressing disappointment over the lack of comprehensive analysis. Key issues remain regarding the water supply and the status of the Santa Ynez Reservoir, raising questions about preparedness in the face of compromised systems.
During a meeting on Tuesday, LAFD Interim Fire Chief Ronnie Villanueva outlined new operational efficiencies aimed at enhancing response times during emergencies. “During red-flag warnings, all staff and apparatus are now recalled immediately. No delays, no exceptions,” stated Joe Everett, the incident commander for the Palisades Fire. This proactive measure aims to prevent future disasters.
In the coming months, further assessments—including an independent review ordered by the City Council—are expected to shed light on the situation. Park is hopeful that these reports will provide the answers she seeks.
