Afghanistan and Pakistan have committed to a ceasefire, aiming to halt weeks of intense conflict that resulted in numerous fatalities and injuries. The truce, facilitated by mediators from Qatar and Turkey, took effect immediately. This agreement is intended to pause hostilities that have escalated since early October, with both nations accusing each other of aggressive actions.

The violence along the border has claimed the lives of dozens and left hundreds injured. Afghanistan has rejected claims that it shelters militants responsible for attacks in border regions. On the other hand, Pakistan has faced a resurgence of militancy since 2021, following the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan.

Zabihullah Mujahid, the chief spokesman for the Taliban government, expressed optimism regarding the results of the negotiations held in Doha. He confirmed that both countries signed a bilateral agreement during the discussions. “It has been decided that neither country will undertake any hostile actions against the other, nor will they support groups carrying out attacks against Pakistan,” Mujahid stated.

The terms of the ceasefire also include a commitment from both nations to refrain from targeting each other’s security forces, civilians, or critical infrastructure. To ensure compliance with the agreement, a future mechanism will be established under the mediation of intermediary countries. This framework will allow for the review of bilateral claims and the effective implementation of the ceasefire.

Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif corroborated the deal on social media platform X, indicating that “Cross-border terrorism from Afghan territory will cease immediately.” Asif emphasized the importance of respecting each nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

A follow-up meeting is scheduled for October 25, 2023, in Istanbul, where delegations from both countries will convene to discuss further details of the agreement.

Both Mujahid and Asif expressed gratitude to Qatar and Turkey for their roles in facilitating the dialogue that led to the ceasefire. The agreement offers a glimmer of hope for stabilizing relations between the two neighbors, who have historically faced challenges in their interactions.

As the ceasefire takes effect, the international community will closely monitor the situation, hoping for a sustained reduction in violence and a pathway toward diplomatic resolution.
