American Canyon High School celebrated a triumphant Senior Night on October 6, 2023, securing a decisive 35-14 victory over Petaluma High School. The win marked an important milestone for the Wolves, who remain unbeaten in the Vine Valley Athletic League, improving their overall record to 6-1 and their league record to 3-0.
The evening started with some challenges as the game was delayed, and the Wolves’ defense took time to find its rhythm. After conceding an early touchdown, American Canyon’s defense rallied, making critical adjustments that turned the tide of the match. With three takeaways, including an interception by senior Cole Gholar, the Wolves prevented Petaluma from scoring for nearly the entire second half.
Gholar’s interception came with just under three minutes left in the first quarter, following a scoring drive by Petaluma that concluded with a touchdown from Brody Stevens. This pivotal moment shifted the momentum in favor of the Wolves. Gholar described the play, saying, “I went to the flat and sunk back, read the quarterback’s eyes and saw the ball up in the air and just went up and got it.”
After tying the game at 7-7 on a 73-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Kameron Hunter to Webster Burks, the Wolves’ defense tightened its grip. Coach Marcellus Holmes noted the importance of sticking to their game plan despite the initial setbacks. “We knew it was going to be a physical game,” Holmes stated, emphasizing the significance of the turnovers that altered the course of the match.
American Canyon’s offense showcased its versatility, particularly through the ground game led by senior Andre Lopez and junior Isaac Anderson. Lopez amassed 97 yards on 11 carries, while Anderson made a substantial impact with 81 yards on just three carries, including a crucial 44-yard touchdown run that propelled the Wolves ahead 14-7. Holmes referred to Anderson as his “American Army Knife,” highlighting the player’s ability to adapt and contribute in various ways.
Hunter, in his first year as a full-time starter, demonstrated impressive composure, throwing for a total of 196 yards and two touchdowns, both to Burks. His performance included a 16-yard touchdown pass just before halftime, giving the Wolves a commanding 28-7 lead. “He’s very coachable and mature for his age,” Holmes commented on Hunter’s development throughout the season.
As the game progressed, American Canyon capitalized on another turnover, with Chamari Urrutia recovering a fumble that set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Marcus-jasiri Hughes, extending the lead to 35-7 with just over eight minutes remaining. While Petaluma managed to score a late touchdown through Evan Clarke, it proved insufficient to alter the outcome.
Reflecting on the victory, Gholar expressed the significance of the win on Senior Night. “It feels amazing to get this win on Senior Night. Last year we didn’t get the dub, but this year we made sure to come away with a win,” he said, emphasizing the pride he felt for his family, teammates, and coaching staff.
With this victory, American Canyon is set to face Napa next week, aiming to continue their strong performance in the league. The Wolves’ combination of defensive tenacity and offensive prowess signals a promising trajectory as they navigate the remainder of their season.
