URGENT UPDATE: Los Angeles County officials have just declared a state of emergency in response to escalating federal immigration raids. This critical proclamation was passed on October 3, 2023, by a 4-1 vote, enabling the county to mobilize resources to assist residents financially impacted by actions from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The declaration, introduced by County Supervisors Lindsey P. Horvath and Janice Hahn, aims to address the widespread fear among the county’s over 3 million immigrants. According to supervisors, ICE raids have led to significant disruptions, including decreased workplace attendance and strain on essential services such as schools and hospitals.
“This is an emergency affecting our communities, and Los Angeles County is responding accordingly,” stated Horvath in a press release. The emergency declaration allows for immediate rent relief for tenants adversely affected by the raids, as well as funding for legal aid and other vital services.
The ongoing raids have created a climate of fear, causing many families to live under constant threat, as Horvath noted, “For months, families have lived under threat and workers have been taken from job sites.” The new measures will expedite the mobilization of state and federal financial assistance to combat the crisis.
Authorities also highlighted the urgent need for the county government to coordinate effectively in order to protect immigrant communities. The emergency powers granted by this declaration will remain in effect until the board decides to terminate them.
As this situation evolves, further updates will be provided. The local community is urged to stay informed and engaged as officials work to mitigate the impact of these federal actions.
