In a strong performance at the Montezuma Invitational on September 28, 2023, Ashlynn Hosbond achieved a personal best, winning her first race of the season. The Colfax-Mingo girls cross country team secured third place among five competitors from the South Iowa Cedar League, scoring a total of 70 points.

The meet, held at the Big Springs Shooting Complex, saw Class 1A No. 10 English Valleys dominate with 29 points, while Sigourney finished in second place with 59 points. The remaining teams in the competition included Belle Plaine (100), BGM (108), and HLV/TC (127).

Outstanding Individual Performance

Hosbond led the girls’ 5K race, clocking in at a remarkable 20 minutes, 6.1 seconds. Her performance not only secured her victory but also marked a significant improvement in her running times. Other notable finishes for the Colfax-Mingo team included Ivy Anderson, who placed 11th with a time of 23:30.2, and Sahara Buenrostro, who finished 21st in 25:33.8.

Additionally, Lilyan Hadsall and Mallory Sipma rounded out the scoring runners, finishing in 23rd and 31st places, respectively. Despite their strong showing, Sigourney outperformed Colfax-Mingo, securing positions of 3rd, 4th, 8th, and 12th among their runners.

Challenges Ahead for C-M Girls

The following week, the Colfax-Mingo team faced a more challenging field at the North Polk meet on October 3, 2023. Competing against nine schools, seven of which had appeared in the latest rankings, the Tigerhawks placed 10th with 246 points. Class 3A No. 11 Boone won the meet with 64 points, narrowly defeating Class 3A No. 12 Gilbert, who scored 66 points.

In this competitive race, Hosbond finished in 12th place with a time of 20:37.4. The rest of the team included Ivy Anderson, who placed 51st in 23:10.4, and Sipma in 62nd with a time of 24:40.38. Jessica Gibson and Hadsall also contributed, finishing in 68th and 69th places, respectively.

Gilbert’s Keira Anderson, currently ranked 27th in Class 3A, won the girls’ race with a time of 18:54.68, followed closely by Laura Streck of Van Meter, who is ranked No. 1 in 2A, finishing in 19:16.2.

The Colfax-Mingo girls cross country team continues to face tough competition as they prepare for future meets, showcasing resilience and determination in their performances.
