tampa-family-advocates-for-genetic-testing-during-cancer-awareness-month

In Tampa, Florida, a family is raising awareness about genetic testing as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Mandi Johnson and her cousin Skylar Trujillo are sharing their personal experiences with the BRCA 1 gene to encourage others with similar family histories to consider genetic testing. Their message is clear: early detection and preventive measures can be life-saving.

Mandi, at the age of 43, underwent genetic testing after her doctor recommended it due to her family history of breast cancer. Although the test cost her $250, she felt compelled to proceed. “I almost didn’t do the testing… but something told me to do it,” Mandi recalled. The results indicated that she carries the BRCA 1 gene, a mutation linked to a significantly increased risk of developing various cancers, including triple-negative breast cancer.

This diagnosis shifted Mandi’s life dramatically. Following a late-stage breast cancer diagnosis in her aunt at age 39, she opted for preventive surgery, including a double mastectomy and hysterectomy. “I was able to proactively treat my risk,” Mandi explained. Despite not having any tumors at the time, her family’s history made it clear that action was necessary. Mandi said doctors had advised her to have the mastectomy as early as age 29, but it was her cousin Skylar who faced a similar fight at the same age.

Skylar Trujillo, now 29 and a mother of four, is currently battling stage three triple-negative metastatic breast cancer. She, too, carries the BRCA 1 gene. “I have to worry about my kids,” Skylar said, expressing the emotional toll of her diagnosis. After noticing a rapid growth of a lump shortly after breastfeeding her youngest child, Skylar sought treatment. “It literally just grew so fast,” she stated.

Undergoing treatment at the Moffitt Cancer Center, Skylar is participating in a clinical trial that has already resulted in a 50% reduction in her tumor size. Her regimen includes immunotherapy and weekly treatments. As she navigates these challenges, Skylar recognizes the impact on her family. “I try to be as strong as I can for my kids, but I don’t like them seeing me sad or upset,” she shared.

Both Mandi and Skylar emphasize the importance of awareness around genetic testing. Skylar remarked, “I didn’t even know if there was genetic testing until my cousin brought it to my attention.” They aim to inspire others to seek early testing and preventive care, believing it can dramatically alter outcomes.

Skylar has aspirations beyond her treatment. “I truly want to be an advocate for young girls going through this,” she stated, highlighting the need for increased awareness. Their story serves as a powerful reminder of the value of knowledge and proactive health measures.

To support Skylar and raise funds for breast cancer awareness, the non-profit organization Nickels for Nipples is hosting a fundraiser on October 19, 2023, from 15:00 to 20:00 at Texas Roadhouse in Brooksville, Florida. A portion of the proceeds will go directly to Skylar. Additionally, Mandi’s company, Next Path Career Partners, is sponsoring the family in the Miles for Moffitt event on November 22, 2023. Community members are encouraged to join their team or contribute to Skylar’s GoFundMe campaign.

By sharing their experiences, Mandi and Skylar hope to empower others to take charge of their health and advocate for genetic testing, potentially saving lives in the process.
