URGENT UPDATE: Doug Long, a beloved theater professor and director at DePaul University, has passed away at the age of 62 due to complications from leukemia. Long died on Aug. 26, 2023, at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, as confirmed by his wife, Kay Long.
Long was a pivotal figure in the DePaul community, where he dedicated over 15 years to directing the university’s first-year program. This program was instrumental in helping freshmen develop essential skills in research, writing, and critical thinking while fostering community connections throughout the vibrant city of Chicago. His commitment to the urban identity and diversity of the university was deeply felt by thousands of students.
“Doug lived DePaul’s mission and identity,” stated Mark Pohlad, an associate professor at DePaul. “He couldn’t wait to introduce students to campus, neighborhoods, and a life of the mind and heart.”
Born in 1962 in Anderson, Indiana, Long’s passion for theater ignited early, leading him to earn a bachelor’s degree in journalism and theater from Ball State University in 1984. He later pursued further education at Indiana University, culminating in a Master of Fine Arts in directing in 1995.
Long joined DePaul as an adjunct professor in 2000 and became a full-time faculty member in 2006. He was appointed director of the first-year program in 2009, overseeing critical courses such as Chicago Quarter and Focal Point Seminar. His innovative approach to teaching and directing left an indelible impact on students and faculty alike.
“Doug excelled at helping others to shine,” said Heather Easley, a fellow professor at DePaul. “He was a rare person who could serve as a human spotlight for the good in others.”
Long’s contributions to theater extended beyond the classroom. He directed numerous local productions and held a significant role at Victory Gardens Theater, where he taught several courses. His artistic vision and ability to nurture talent were widely recognized, making him a cherished community-builder.
Colleagues and students alike remember Long for his kindness and unwavering support. Leah Bryant, an associate professor at DePaul, described him as “beloved across the university,” highlighting his dedication and willingness to invest time in others’ personal and professional growth.
In a fitting tribute, Long was awarded the Spirit of DePaul award in September for exemplifying the university’s values. The university plans to rename its Innovation in Teaching Award in his honor, ensuring his legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
Long is survived by his wife Kay, his twin brother Dave, a son named Adam, a daughter named Sarah, two additional brothers, William and Benjamin, and his parents, Fred and Patricia. A celebration of life is scheduled for Oct. 25, with details available by emailing [email protected].
As the DePaul community mourns the loss of Doug Long, his impact on students and the theater world will be felt for years to come. Those wishing to pay tribute are encouraged to reflect on the profound difference he made in countless lives.
