The Garden Clubs of Valdosta received the prestigious Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation from the Colonel Ebenezer Folsom Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) on October 6, 2025. This recognition, presented at The Crescent in downtown Valdosta, acknowledges the clubs’ significant contributions to preserving local history, particularly their efforts surrounding the iconic Crescent mansion.
The award is granted to individuals or organizations dedicated to the restoration and preservation of historical sites, artifacts, and monuments. The Garden Clubs of Valdosta were honored for their nearly 75 years of commitment to the Crescent, a landmark that has become synonymous with the community.
Preservation Efforts Since 1951
The journey to preserve the Crescent began in 1951 when three dedicated members of the Garden Club—Mrs. T.H. Smith, Mrs. Leonard Mederer, and Mrs. R.B. Whitehead—successfully campaigned to save the building from demolition. Their efforts not only averted its destruction but also transformed it into the home for all the Garden Clubs in Valdosta.
For the first 32 years, the Garden Center focused on fundraising and restoration projects, culminating in the completion of the Crescent’s restoration in 1983. Since then, the clubs have continued to maintain and preserve this historic site, ensuring its legacy within the community endures.
The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was established in 1890 with the aim of promoting historic preservation, education, and patriotism. The organization emphasizes the importance of recognizing those who contribute to this mission. As such, the recognition of the Garden Clubs of Valdosta serves as a testament to their enduring commitment to preserving the history and culture of Valdosta.
The award ceremony not only highlighted the clubs’ achievements but also reinforced the significance of community involvement in preserving local heritage. As the Garden Clubs of Valdosta continue their work, they serve as an inspiring example of how collective efforts can protect and celebrate the history of a region.
