On March 16, 2024, the Kiwanis Club of Tryon, in collaboration with Key Club members, successfully hosted its annual Pancake Breakfast fundraiser at St. Luke’s Plaza. The event, which had been postponed the previous weekend due to inclement weather, attracted many community members eager to enjoy a selection of regular and gluten-free pancakes, along with bacon, sausage, fresh apples, maple syrup, and a variety of beverages.
The outdoor breakfast served not only to satisfy appetites but also played a crucial role in raising scholarship funds for students at both Polk County High School and Early College. The Kiwanis Club traditionally awards between $4,000 and $5,000 annually in college scholarships to Key Club members, highlighting the organization’s commitment to education and community support.
Numerous volunteers from the Kiwanis and Key Club worked diligently throughout the event. Key Club member Lucas Johnson expressed the significance of the occasion, stating, “I enjoy the opportunity to meet and help members of the community, and Key Club is a great way to do that.” His fellow member, Kenzie Davis, added, “I love getting out in the community, helping, and seeing all the wonderful smiles on people’s faces.”
Honoring Community Service and Leadership
The Pancake Breakfast also featured a special visit from three distinguished members of the Kiwanis family: Jon Hethcox, Carolinas District Governor; Jennifer Hethcox, Carolinas District Circle K Administrator; and Dawn Puderbaugh Hodges, Kiwanis International Trustee. Their presence underscored the importance of community service and leadership within the organization.
A significant highlight of the event was the presentation of the Legion of Honor award to Bob Scruggs, recognizing his fifty years of dedication to the Kiwanis Club of Tryon. Although Scruggs has faced health challenges, including undergoing kidney dialysis, the recognition was made even more poignant by his absence from recent club meetings. The award ceremony brought a sense of warmth and gratitude from all attendees.
The Kiwanis Club extended appreciation to local businesses that contributed to the success of the breakfast, specifically Tryon Coffeehouse, Trade St. Diner, and Throwbax Grille for providing kitchen and seating space.
The Pancake Breakfast is an event held twice a year, demonstrating the Kiwanis Club’s ongoing commitment to community engagement and support. The Kiwanis Club of Tryon meets every Wednesday at noon at the Tryon Depot, continuing its tradition of service and fellowship.
