
Bob Retzlaff, a highly regarded journalist and dedicated community member, passed away on September 30, 2025, surrounded by family and friends. His life, marked by a passion for storytelling and a deep commitment to his community, spanned nearly a century, leaving an indelible mark on those who knew him.
Born in 1931 in Faribault, Minnesota, Retzlaff graduated from Faribault High School in 1949. During his high school years, he excelled as a multi-sport athlete, participating in baseball, basketball, and his favorite sport, golf. His love for writing blossomed early as he contributed to the high school newspaper, which set the foundation for his long and distinguished career in journalism.
In January 1951, Retzlaff enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves, achieving the rank of Master Sergeant with the 328th Ordnance Company. His unit was activated during the Berlin crisis, leading him to serve at Fort Polk, Louisiana, and later return to Faribault, where he was honorably discharged in February 1963.
Retzlaff’s newspaper career spanned over seven decades, primarily with two publications. He worked at the Faribault Daily News from 1949 to 1959, where he began as a reporter and photographer, eventually becoming the sports editor. In 1959, he joined the Rochester Post Bulletin, where his roles ranged from general reporter to managing editor. He concluded his career at the Post Bulletin in 2019 as a travel editor and writer, a role that allowed him to share his love of travel with readers.
His marriage to Sandra Lorge, the society editor at the Faribault Daily News, took place on September 26, 1959. They shared 40 years of marriage until her passing in May 2000. Together, they had two children and four grandchildren, who were a source of immense pride and joy for Retzlaff.
Retzlaff was passionate about exploring the world. He and Sandra traveled extensively, visiting all seven continents and sailing on each of the seven seas. In a remarkable year, he walked along the Arctic Circle in spring and threw a snowball in Antarctica that fall. His articles often captured the essence of his travels, detailing the people, cultures, and cuisines he encountered, enticing readers to join him on future adventures.
Community Engagement and Legacy
An active member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Rochester, Retzlaff participated in various civic organizations and committees that contributed to the growth of Rochester during a pivotal time in its history. His involvement helped shape the city into a center of technology, medicine, and commerce in the Midwest.
Retzlaff’s life was filled with challenges and triumphs, each contributing to his rich narrative. His journey was not only about successes but also the lessons learned from failures, all woven into the fabric of his character. The love and support of family and friends played a crucial role in leading him to a fulfilling life.
In his later years, Retzlaff received compassionate care from Mayo Clinic physicians, as well as staff at Prelude Homes in Woodbury and Cottagewood Senior Community in Rochester. This support allowed him to live comfortably until his passing.
