UPDATE: The highly anticipated documentary “How We Roll,” directed by Anthony Ciancio, is set to premiere tonight, October 5, 2023, at 5 PM in Elmwood Park. This film showcases the beloved bocce ball league that has become an integral part of the community, celebrating the enduring legacy of Ciancio’s father, Mike Ciancio, who founded the league in 2014.

The film’s hometown debut holds special significance, as it brings together the very players and families who make up the vibrant bocce community. “The Oak Park Film Festival was a great experience, but this screening is personal,” Anthony shared. “These are the people who run the league and have supported the game.”

Since its inception, the Elmwood Park Bocce league has exploded in popularity, growing from just eight teams to over 150 teams today, with a waiting list for new players. This surge in participation reflects not only the sport’s charm but also its role in uniting friends and families year-round in Elmwood Park, a suburb of Chicago.

The documentary was born during a challenging period for Ciancio. After years in futures trading, he pursued his passion for filmmaking. “I always wanted to get into films, and finally, I just hit a wall,” he said, explaining how he transitioned from trading to documenting the bocce league that enriched his childhood. Filming began in 2021, but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and personal challenges, including his own bouts with the virus and the birth of his child. Now, after years of hard work, “How We Roll” is ready to connect with those who have lived this journey.

Bocce is a deceptively simple yet engaging game that invites players of all skill levels to join. Matches typically last less than 30 minutes, creating a casual atmosphere where neighbors can catch up while competing. Ciancio remarked, “Players drive in from all over the Chicago area for bocce nights. It’s a tether to where I grew up.”

The excitement surrounding tonight’s screening is palpable, as Ciancio prepares to unveil his film to a supportive audience. “I know these people well; I’ve played alongside them for years,” he expressed. “It’s a lot of pressure, but I’m excited to share this part of our community.”

Join the celebration at the Elmwood Park Recreation Center, located at 2 Conti Parkway. The film promises to be a heartfelt tribute to a community that has rallied around a game, fostering connections that transcend generations.

This premiere not only marks a milestone for Ciancio but also highlights the spirit of resilience and togetherness in Elmwood Park. The bocce ball league stands as a testament to how a simple game can create lasting memories and friendships. Don’t miss your chance to witness this emotional journey tonight!
