UPDATE: California’s Bay Area is bracing for a powerful one-two punch of storms, with a significant rain event set to begin on September 25, 2023. The North Bay is expected to bear the brunt of this weather system, marking the first widespread rainfall of the season.

Forecasters from the National Weather Service predict a 40 percent chance of rain starting Monday after 11 a.m., intensifying into the night and continuing through Tuesday evening. Wind gusts could reach 15 mph, posing risks for travel, especially on bridges and coastal highways.

Meteorologist Nicole Sarment explains, “Really, it boils down to an active Pacific Ocean. We’re looking at several low-pressure systems that pull moisture from different sources.” This tropical deluge is anticipated to arrive by Monday morning, with a second storm following on Wednesday, fueled by a typhoon in the western Pacific.

The North Bay could see as much as 1 inch of rain by week’s end, while San Francisco may receive up to 0.5 inches. The East Bay is forecasted for around 0.25 inches, and the region’s interior is expected to witness a modest 0.1 inches. This rainfall is critical, especially after air quality advisories due to wildfire smoke from southwestern Oregon plagued the area over the weekend.

The imminent storms are predicted to clear the air, with Sarment reassuring locals, “Fortunately, with a weather pattern like this, the atmosphere becomes more turbulent, so we’re not going to see that smoke linger.”

While showers may persist until late Wednesday night, residents can anticipate clearer skies by Thursday morning. This is a developing situation; stay tuned for updates as the storms approach and prepare for potential disruptions.
