On September 25, 2025, the Coalition for Sustainable Procurement was officially launched in New York, coinciding with the UN General Assembly High-level Week. This new initiative aims to integrate sustainability into procurement and supply chains around the world. It represents a collaborative effort between public and private sectors, spearheaded by the UN Global Compact. The Coalition’s goal is to transform policy intentions into actionable strategies that utilize purchasing power for climate action, nature conservation, and equitable growth.

Founding Members and Their Commitments

The Coalition’s founding members include notable organizations such as Altus Power, Inc., BBVA, JDE Peet’s N.V., and Schneider Electric SE. Their involvement signals a strong commitment to responsible sourcing and supplier decarbonization, aiming to create more resilient and transparent supply chains. This collective initiative also seeks to open global value chains to small and medium-sized enterprises, fostering greater inclusivity in sustainable procurement practices.

During the launch event held at the Chrysler Building, Chief Procurement Officers, sustainability leaders, and government officials engaged in high-level discussions. Participants emphasized the critical role of public sector support in establishing regulatory frameworks and integrating sustainability criteria into government purchasing. This approach aims to set market standards that the private sector can adopt quickly and effectively.

Strategic Focus and Key Initiatives

The dialogue at the forum focused on aligning policies with sustainable development goals, identifying barriers to implementation, and exploring cooperative strategies to make sustainable procurement the norm. In conjunction with the launch, the Coalition released its inaugural publication titled Procurement: A Catalyst for Sustainable Growth and Resilience. This report outlines the current landscape of sustainable procurement, highlighting gaps and emerging trends while providing frameworks, tools, and case studies for organizations.

Looking forward, the Coalition has outlined several areas for action. One key focus is creating a platform for public-private collaboration, enabling leading supply chain stakeholders to share real data and examples of both challenges and innovations in driving sustainable practices. This initiative aims to inform policymaking and support the development of effective regulatory frameworks.

Additionally, the Coalition seeks to provide shared guidance and practical tools for buyers to consider environmental and social impacts alongside traditional factors such as cost and quality. The goal is to transform discussions into actionable initiatives that promote sustainable procurement.

By uniting various stakeholders around practical solutions, the Coalition aims to harmonize expectations, reduce transaction costs, and accelerate investment flows into equitable and resilient supply chains. This collaborative effort will assist companies in operationalizing their commitments to climate action, human rights, and responsible technology, while also guiding policymakers in establishing supportive regulations that reward long-term value creation.
