On October 18, 2024, the local advocacy group OCD Awareness SCV will host a community walk aimed at raising awareness of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The event, scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon at Fair Oaks Park in Santa Clarita, seeks to address the stigma surrounding OCD and reduce the average 17-year wait for effective treatment faced by many sufferers.
Now in its fifth year, this annual event is produced in collaboration with OCD SoCal and the International OCD Foundation. The walk will feature inspiring success stories from individuals affected by OCD, educational resources, and interactive activities designed to foster a supportive community. Participants will also join a walk around the park in solidarity with the IOCDF’s “One Million Steps for OCD” campaign.
Community Support and Advocacy
OCD Awareness SCV began as a grassroots volunteer group in 2020, formed by dedicated local community members. In 2024, the group became an affiliate of OCD SoCal. Their mission focuses on advocating for OCD awareness, creating opportunities for support, and enhancing connections within the local OCD community.
Psychologist Michelle Witkin emphasized the significance of the event, stating, “The walk creates much-needed community and provides hope for OCD sufferers and those who love them.” Such initiatives play a crucial role in not only increasing awareness but also in promoting understanding and empathy towards those living with OCD.
Event Details and Participation
The community is encouraged to participate in this free event, which will provide a platform for sharing experiences and resources related to OCD. Attendees can register and find more information at tinyurl.com/25vu763j. The walk offers a unique opportunity for individuals and families to connect, learn, and support one another while advocating for better access to treatment options.
As the event approaches, organizers hope to draw attention to the challenges faced by those with OCD, aiming to create a more informed and compassionate society. By participating, community members can contribute to a larger movement dedicated to understanding and alleviating the struggles associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder.
