BREAKING: Cleveland Cavaliers star point guard Darius Garland will participate in limited basketball activities during training camp, raising concerns as he is expected to miss at least the first month of the regular season. Garland underwent surgery on his injured big toe, which plagued him throughout the playoffs in June.

The Cavaliers, who boasted the best record in the Eastern Conference last season, faced a heartbreaking elimination by the Indiana Pacers in five games during the conference semifinals. Cavaliers president of basketball operations Koby Altman shared an optimistic update, stating, “He focused on the things we’ve been talking about for a long time, which is weight room strength. He looks good. He’s stronger, more stout and has a great attitude.”

With the regular season looming, the team is navigating Garland’s recovery while considering lineup adjustments. Donovan Mitchell is expected to transition to point guard, with Sam Merrill stepping into the shooting guard role. Additionally, the Cavaliers have acquired Lonzo Ball from the Chicago Bulls, who is anticipated to play a significant role early in the season. Coach Kenny Atkinson praised Ball’s fit with the team’s style, stating, “With this guy, he hits what we do to a tee. He will add a lot.”

The Cavaliers also face challenges with forward Max Strus, who is projected to be sidelined for the first two months of the season following surgery on a broken left foot. Altman indicated that the team may have a clearer timeline after six days of training camp workouts next week at IMG Academy in Sarasota, Florida.

Garland had an impressive season last year, averaging 20.6 points and 6.7 assists. However, he missed the final two games of the regular season and four playoff games due to the turf toe injury. As the Cavaliers prepare for the upcoming season, De’Andre Hunter, acquired at the trade deadline, is expected to absorb most minutes in Strus’ absence.

Fans are eagerly anticipating how the Cavaliers will adapt under these circumstances and whether they can maintain their competitive edge as the regular season approaches. Stay tuned for updates on Garland’s recovery and the Cavaliers’ preparations as they aim to rebound from last season’s playoff exit.
