On September 21, 2023, hundreds gathered in Hanapepe, Kauai, to celebrate the International Day of Peace through a vibrant array of activities. The event, organized by the Kauai Soto Zen Temple and the Storybook Theatre, with sponsorship from the Interfaith Roundtable of Kauai (IROK), featured communal meals, music, dance, and the ringing of bells, all emphasizing the theme “Act Now.”

The activities, which extended until September 25, were designed to include local school children, ensuring a broader participation in the spirit of peace. “Of course, we all know that we need to live, and live peace, every day and every moment,” said Steve “Stream” Backinoff of IROK in an email.

Participants gathered at the Storybook Theatre and the Sparky’s Peace Garden, where a diverse international potluck showcased dishes from various cultures alongside local salads and desserts. “We eat together, we pray together,” noted Mark Jeffers of the Storybook Theatre, highlighting that this year marked the largest turnout in 13 years of organizing the event.

A group of visitors from Naples, Italy, were among the attendees, having been directed to the festivities by a taxi driver eager to share the experience. The group formed connections with local participants, exemplifying the event’s goal of fostering fellowship and cultural exchange. “When I found out they were from Italy, I went wild,” shared a new friend from the gathering.

Cultural performances enriched the day, including a presentation by Chucky Boy Chock, Executive Director of the Kauai Museum, who spoke about Kauai’s Legacy of Peace. Additionally, Rev. Kohtoku Hirao of the Waimea Shingon Mission emphasized the significance of the paper cranes crafted by students from Eleele Elementary School and community volunteers. Over 5,000 cranes adorned the peace statue, symbolizing hope for a peaceful future. Hirao explained that the act of burning the paper cranes releases their energy and spirit, allowing it to rise and spread.

For those unable to attend the event, Backinoff offered a poignant suggestion: “Find one other human and make an affirmation or promise that goes something like this…” He encouraged individuals to cultivate inner peace and forgiveness, reinforcing the day’s message of connection and tranquility.

The International Day of Peace was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1981. In 2001, the Assembly unanimously designated the day as a period of non-violence and cease-fire. The symbolism of the United Nations Peace Bell, which is rung at UN Headquarters in New York City, further underscores the importance of this day. The bell, cast from coins and medals contributed by representatives of over 60 nations, bears the inscription, “Long live absolute world peace.”

As the celebrations concluded, the spirit of community and the commitment to peace resonated throughout Hanapepe, leaving participants inspired to carry the message of peace into their everyday lives.
