caltrans-to-close-i-5-connector-to-i-8-for-weekend-roadwork

Caltrans has announced the closure of all lanes on the northbound I-5 connector to the I-8 this weekend, starting at 21:00 on Friday, September 26, and resuming operations at 05:00 on Monday, September 29. This closure is necessary to facilitate essential roadwork, including culvert replacement and pavement rehabilitation along the main roadway, shoulders, and freeway ramps. The agency aims to enhance performance, safety, and environmental conservation throughout the affected sections.

Motorists traveling northbound on I-5 are advised to seek alternate routes, such as State Route 163, State Route 15, or Interstate 805, to navigate around the closure. Those who continue past State Route 163 will be redirected to either westbound or eastbound I-8. To alleviate congestion, the Moore Street onramp to northbound I-5 in Old Town will also be closed. Additional onramps at Camino Del Rio West in the Sports Arena area, Sea World Drive/Tecolote Road, and Clairemont Drive will be unavailable during this time, while the northbound I-5 onramp from Mission Bay Drive will remain open.

All bus services are expected to operate as scheduled despite the construction. Local businesses near Damon Avenue should prepare for potential construction noise and lighting throughout the weekend. Caltrans will implement message signs along the routes to provide updates and suggest alternative paths to drivers.

Ongoing Infrastructure Improvements

This project marks the second of several planned full freeway closures as part of the I-5 Asset Management Project, designed to maintain the integrity of the southern segment of Interstate 5. This initiative is part of a broader $1.6 billion investment across San Diego County, which includes a $623 million allocation specifically aimed at enhancing safety and infrastructure on I-5, I-805, and State Route 78.

Caltrans emphasizes that the construction schedule may be adjusted due to weather conditions, traffic incidents, or other unforeseen factors. For continuous updates regarding traffic speed, lane closures, and additional construction activities, motorists can refer to the official Caltrans website, ensuring they remain informed and can plan their journeys accordingly.
