UPDATE: Texas Democrat Colin Allred has officially launched his campaign for the U.S. Senate, declaring the Lone Star State a critical battleground for the Democratic Party ahead of the March 3, 2026 primary. In an exclusive interview with Newsweek, Allred emphasized that if Democrats can build a strong coalition in Texas, they can replicate that success nationwide.
Allred, a former NFL linebacker, civil rights lawyer, and three-term congressman, aims to achieve what no Democrat has accomplished in over three decades—winning a statewide election in Texas. After narrowly losing to incumbent Republican Senator Ted Cruz in the previous election, Allred is determined to leverage his grassroots strategy to connect with voters, stating, “We can win here, and when we do, I think it’ll be something that the entire country can pay attention to.”
As Allred steps into the race, he faces competition from notable Democrats including state Representative James Talarico and former ISS Commander Terry Virts. With Texas Democrats historically underperforming, Allred’s ability to unite the party is crucial. He noted, “There are a lot of Texans who are working harder and harder for less,” promising to be their voice.
Allred’s campaign strategy includes attending high school football games, events he enjoys personally and sees as opportunities to engage with the community. “That setting is a way to have conversations that are just not so explicitly political,” he explained. He plans to visit various venues like barbershops and restaurants to reach voters directly.
In addition to grassroots outreach, Allred has unveiled a comprehensive anti-corruption plan aimed at reforming the political landscape in Texas. He proposes ending gerrymandering, banning individual stock trading by Congress members, and enhancing the Federal Election Commission’s authority. “Corruption hurts working people, and we have to unrig what I consider to be a rigged system,” Allred stated.
The timing of Allred’s campaign coincides with growing concerns about political violence and free speech, particularly following the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Allred condemned political violence and emphasized the importance of protecting free speech, stating, “In this country, we don’t have to worry that you can’t criticize the administration.”
With Texas poised as a crucial state for the Democratic Party, analysts predict that a victory here could significantly impact Senate dynamics. Allred’s candidacy marks an urgent moment for Texas Democrats, who have often struggled in statewide races. “If we can compete here, if we can build the coalition that we need here, then we can do it anywhere,” he affirmed.
As the race heats up, Allred is focused on showcasing his vision and commitment to Texas voters, emphasizing that his campaign is about more than just winning—it’s about representing the voices of everyday Texans. “We have to fight for a better future for our children,” he concluded.
The primary election on March 3, 2026, looms large, and as Allred continues to campaign, all eyes will be on Texas to see if the Democratic Party can finally break their decades-long drought in statewide elections.
