At The Pearl at Boulder Creek in Boulder Creek, Colorado, a recent initiative transformed the community, driven by resident input. When Dial Senior Living, the organization managing The Pearl, recognized the need for a refresh of furniture and flooring, they prioritized resident feedback, leading to significant changes that enhance the quality of life for all.
Residents participated actively in committees that focused on various aspects of community life, including restaurant design, activities, and facility management. Their suggestions were not only welcomed but also significantly influenced the renovations. One notable change was the installation of acoustical enhancements in the restaurant, aimed at improving conversation during meals.
Community-Driven Renovation
The renovations at The Pearl evolved into a comprehensive overhaul rather than a simple refresh. “It turned out to be more of a renovation than a refresh, which speaks to the commitment of Dial,” said Kelly Dwyer, the Executive Director of The Pearl. The changes included a revamped health and wellness center, a dedicated art room, and an expanded space for community events.
Residents like Nyla Witmore, a visual artist, played a crucial role in the redesign process. Nyla, along with fellow resident Bernadette Russek, who chaired the restaurant committee, dedicated time to creating layouts that fostered a more spacious and inviting atmosphere. “The new high-backed booths nurture pockets of conversation,” Nyla explained, emphasizing how the design helps mitigate background noise.
The collaboration between residents and the design team ensured that their insights shaped the environment. “Our residents, who experience day-to-day life in the building, were the experts on what they needed,” Dwyer added.
Innovative Spaces for Art and Wellness
The art room, a product of Nyla and fellow resident Joan Patch’s vision, now boasts ample storage for supplies and display shelving for resident creations. Joan, a retired interior designer, emphasized the importance of having a dedicated space, stating, “This was an opportunity to create something special for our community.” The art room features a gallery in the lobby, where resident artworks are regularly exhibited.
Additionally, the refresh included structural changes to improve accessibility and comfort. Resident Jerry Spielvogel, who has a background in industrial engineering and finance, contributed his expertise to ensure the feasibility of resident requests. The installation of a glass wall in the atrium and double doors improved both noise reduction and accessibility.
“Everything we did triggered a chain of events,” Jerry noted, highlighting how each change led to further enhancements. The atrium was enlarged to accommodate community gatherings and performances, while a former apartment was repurposed into a large health and wellness center.
The commitment to resident involvement has fostered a sense of ownership among the community members. “Because we had input, everyone has a feeling of ownership,” Bernadette stated. This collaborative effort reflects The Pearl’s mission to create a vibrant and inclusive community where residents feel valued.
The changes at The Pearl at Boulder Creek illustrate the power of resident engagement in senior living. As Nyla remarked, “The people here are so real, and I’m always discovering something new about them.” The community thrives on its connections, showcasing that regardless of mobility aids or age, the residents share rich life experiences and a commitment to one another.
