UPDATE: In a vibrant twist of community spirit, the Morning Glory Gardens in Long Beach, Minnesota, are set to receive new pavers later this month, enhancing the serene venue that has captured the hearts of locals and visitors alike.
Located on the shores of Lake Minnewaska, this unique garden has been a symbol of beauty and tranquility since the 1960s. It was the vision of newspaper editor Ed Barsness, who transformed an unsightly marsh into a stunning 100-foot-long garden filled with colorful flowers such as carnations, geraniums, and black-eyed Susans.
“This place offers a little tranquility and a piece of mind,” said caretaker Terry Duhn, reflecting the garden’s role in the community. Over 30 volunteers assist Duhn in maintaining the garden, which is a testament to their dedication and love for this cherished locale.
The garden, nestled beside the quaint Morning Glory chapel, has become a popular venue for weddings, hosting four to eight ceremonies each year from spring through fall. The chapel itself, which comfortably seats 12 people, has attracted guests from across the country, marking its significance far beyond its size.
“This site provides a place for reflection,” said Long Beach Mayor Mike Pfeiffer. “It means different things to different people, but it’s a sanctuary for many.” As sunrise casts its golden hues over the chapel and garden, Duhn describes the scene as “brilliant,” emphasizing its beauty and spiritual significance.
In a collaborative effort, FFA students at Minnewaska High School contributed to this year’s garden design, showcasing the community’s commitment to beautification and involvement. Couples looking to tie the knot at the chapel can do so with a $150 donation, making it an accessible choice for many.
As anticipation builds for the new pavers, the Morning Glory Gardens continue to be a shining beacon of community resilience and love. This locale not only celebrates nature’s beauty but also strengthens community ties, making it an essential part of life in Long Beach, Minnesota.
