Schuyler High School’s athletes showcased their skills at two recent events, with the girls’ golf team competing at the Lakeview Invite and the cross country team excelling at the Wahoo Invite. These performances highlighted both individual and team achievements amid a competitive atmosphere.

At the Lakeview Invite held on September 11, 2025, at Quail Run Golf Course in Columbus, the Schuyler girls golf team finished in 10th place with a total score of 516. Sophomore Leighton Short delivered a standout performance, matching her season best with a score of 122. Close behind her was senior Aidee Lucero, who recorded a score of 124. Junior Leydi Santos Cortez and senior Lauren Wemhoff contributed scores of 135, while senior Areli Arellano rounded out the team with a score of 160. Following this event, the team will compete again at the Crete Invite at College Heights Country Club.

In cross country, the Schuyler team achieved notable success at the Wahoo Invite held at Lake Wanahoo. The boys’ team produced three medalists, with sophomore Erik Estayul finishing seventh in a time of 19:01.57. He was closely followed by juniors Boo Hernandez and Giovanni Juarez, who finished in ninth and fifteenth place, respectively, with times of 19:05.11 and 19:55. The boys’ team secured third place overall with a total of 47 points, behind Boys Town and Platteview, who scored 29 and 36 points.

On the girls’ side, senior Miriam Deanda and sophomore Arantza Catalan also brought home medals, finishing eighth and thirteenth with times of 22:51.02 and 23:59.5, respectively. The girls’ team placed sixth overall, accumulating 61 points. Schuyler’s next race will be at the Central City Invite at Valley View Golf Course.

In football, the Howells-Dodge Jaguars maintained their undefeated record with a commanding 62-0 victory over Lyons-Decatur Northeast. Senior Hunter Luther led the offense, rushing for 147 yards and scoring two touchdowns. Junior Chase Luther contributed with two touchdown passes to senior Konner Bourek. Multiple players, including sophomore Oliver Belina and freshmen Andrew Brester and Levi Cada, added to the score. The defense, spearheaded by Chase Luther with nine tackles, played a crucial role in the shutout victory. The Jaguars improved to 3-0 and will host Nebraska Christian on Friday.

In contrast, the Clarkson/Leigh Patriots struggled, losing 42-8 to Pender, which brought their season record to 0-3. Senior Wyatt Crosley rushed for 64 yards and scored the team’s only touchdown in the third quarter, while senior Tucker Matthies led in rushing yards with 90. Defensively, senior Levi Gall recorded a team-high nine tackles. Clarkson/Leigh will host Twin River on Friday.

Schuyler’s football team faced a challenging matchup against Elkhorn Mount Michael, suffering a 69-0 defeat. Senior Marcos Gomez completed eight out of fifteen passes for 71 yards and one interception. Defensive efforts were led by sophomore Ben Rocheford and Gomez, who had eight and seven tackles, respectively. The Warriors have yet to secure a win this season, now standing at 0-3, and will host Omaha Brownell Talbot on Friday.
