Gene Fay Summers, affectionately known as “Woodpecker,” passed away on September 13, 2025, at the age of 77 after a prolonged health battle. He spent his final days in a hospital, surrounded by his loved ones. Born on February 27, 1948, in Rutherfordton, North Carolina, Gene later made his home in Hampton, Virginia, where he became a cherished member of the community over more than 60 years.

Summers dedicated over four decades of his life to Newport News Shipbuilding, where he held the position of Welding Foreman until his retirement in 2009. His commitment to his work and his colleagues was a significant part of his identity. Gene was not just a skilled professional; he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend.

A Life Filled with Love and Family

Gene’s family was at the center of his life. He is survived by his wife, Rita Summers, and their three sons: Ryan (Marisa), William, and Matthew (Catherine). He cherished his role as a grandfather to four grandchildren: Laila, Thomas, Maddox, and Lucas. Gene’s affection extended beyond immediate family, as he maintained strong bonds with his sister, Linda Seely (David), and sister-in-law, Terri. He was also a beloved uncle to several nieces and a nephew.

Throughout his life, Gene enjoyed simple pleasures, such as feeding squirrels and checking his lottery tickets. Known for his warmth and generosity, he will be remembered for his unwavering support and the love he shared with those around him.

Community Tributes and Memorial Services

A memorial service will be held at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home on September 19, 2025, where friends and family can pay their respects from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.. The celebration of Gene’s life will commence at 12:00 p.m., followed by interment at Parklawn Memorial Park.

In honor of Gene’s legacy, the family requests that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Animal Aid Society or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. These donations reflect Gene’s compassionate spirit and his commitment to helping those in need.
