The Unionville girls’ volleyball team delivered a commanding performance, defeating Downingtown West in straight sets, marking the Whippets’ first loss of the season. The match, held on March 15, 2024, showcased Unionville’s dominance, with set scores of 25-14, 25-20, and 25-12. This victory improves Unionville’s record to 4-0 in the Ches-Mont League and 5-0 overall, while Downingtown West now stands at 2-1 in league play and 4-1 overall.

Unionville coach Stephanie Dunn expressed satisfaction with the win, emphasizing the importance of maintaining focus. “It always feels good to get a win and to be undefeated,” Dunn stated. “But we know there’s a lot of work to do. We’ve played in some tournaments, and there are many good teams out there.”

The match was highlighted by standout performances from the Van Deusen sisters. Stalena Van Deusen led with 12 kills, while her sister, Holland Van Deusen, contributed 26 assists and seven kills. Middle blocker Maeve Stokes, along with Lucy Weeber, provided strong support at the net, showcasing effective blocking and dynamic plays.

In the first set, Unionville initially faced a competitive challenge, with both teams tied at 2-2. The Longhorns gradually gained momentum, leveraging strategic plays to win key points. Despite Downingtown West’s efforts to establish aggressive blocks with players like Maya Sanders and Leah Hampson, Unionville found success with clever shots that evaded the defense. Stalena Van Deusen sealed the first set with three kills in the closing moments, largely assisted by Holland. “We have a lot of trust in each other, and she knows how to set,” Stalena remarked.

The second set proved to be more competitive, featuring seven ties and six lead changes. Downingtown West took an early lead but could not maintain it. After a tie at 15-15, Unionville surged ahead with four consecutive points. Stokes and Weeber delivered critical winners at the net as Unionville approached set point. Although Downingtown West rallied briefly, Holland Van Deusen finished the set with a decisive shot, putting Unionville ahead two sets to none.

Dunn acknowledged the increased competitiveness from Downingtown West, stating, “When we come out like we did in the first set, teams respond. They start to figure things out, and it becomes more competitive.” She emphasized the need for her team to maintain its performance consistently throughout matches.

The final set began closely contested, but Unionville quickly established a lead, winning six consecutive points off Genna Gaughan’s serve to go up 14-7. The Longhorns maintained their intensity, ultimately reaching match point at 24-12 before Holland Van Deusen’s service winner concluded the match.

Stalena Van Deusen expressed enthusiasm about the team’s unbeaten record, stating, “It’s great. Hopefully, it can last all season.” Downingtown West will aim to bounce back on March 20, 2024, with a match against West Chester Henderson. Meanwhile, Unionville will host Kennett and prepare for a challenging encounter with state semifinalist Padua Academy of Delaware later in the week.

This victory solidifies Unionville’s strong position in the league, showcasing their potential as a formidable contender this season.
