High school football teams across Boulder, Broomfield, and Longmont delivered thrilling performances in Week 3, showcasing standout players and intense rivalries. In particular, the Frederick Golden Eagles triumphed over Skyline with a decisive score of 56-12, led by senior standout Sonny Delpizzo, who scored four touchdowns during the game.
Delpizzo, listed at 5-foot-7 and 155 pounds, defied his size by dominating on the field. Following a challenging start to the season, with the Golden Eagles holding a record of 1-2, this victory marked a crucial turnaround for the team. Coach Matt Loyd praised Delpizzo’s performance, calling him “the smallest guy on the field who don’t play small.”
The Golden Eagles had previously struggled offensively, failing to score until the final minute in a 31-13 defeat against Broomfield, the top-ranked team in Colorado Preps 4A, in their season opener. They faced another setback the following week, losing 28-0 to 3A No. 5 Mead. However, Delpizzo’s stellar performance against Skyline not only boosted his team’s morale but also set the stage for a promising Week 4 matchup against Montbello.
In addition to Delpizzo’s heroics, other local players also shone brightly during the weekend. Wyatt Volf, quarterback for Niwot, led his team to a hard-fought 49-43 victory over Skyview, marking Niwot’s first win in nearly two years. Volf threw six touchdowns, four of which were caught by Eli Quesada, who made impressive plays with catches of 55, 15, 40, and 70 yards. If Volf’s performance holds, he will have thrown 16 touchdowns over three games this season.
