The Berry Road bridge project, which crosses the Big River, is nearing completion, with a tentative opening scheduled for October 7, 2023. The new structure aims to enhance connectivity for residents in the area, allowing easier access to Bonne Terre without relying on the busy US 67.
Weekly updates from Brian Long, the St. Francois County Road and Bridge Administrator, indicate significant progress. During a recent County Commission meeting, members noted the positive developments, expressing optimism that the project would conclude within the projected timeline. “It seems like they’re making great strides and things are coming together,” the Commission stated on September 2.
Elevating Berry Road necessitated similar adjustments to the entrance of Turkey Creek Road, located just south of the Big River. Long reported that construction on Turkey Creek Road is ongoing and nearing readiness for gravel and paving. Weather conditions have been favorable this summer, alleviating concerns that arose from a wet spring.
The completion of the bridge will improve travel routes for residents living north of the Big River. School buses will also benefit from the new infrastructure, as they will be able to operate their routes without having to cross US 67 to access roads on the west side of Berry Road.
The total cost of the project is $4 million, funded by $2.2 million from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), enacted in 2021, and $1.8 million in state grants. The original bridge was demolished in 2013 after being deemed unsafe for vehicle usage.
The Berry Road bridge project not only addresses safety concerns but also enhances the overall transportation network in the region. As the completion date approaches, local officials and residents alike look forward to the benefits the new infrastructure will bring.
