UPDATE: The Georgia Bulldogs triumphed over Austin Peay with a score of 28-6 after a lengthy two-hour weather delay at Sanford Stadium on Saturday. This victory marks an important step for the fourth-ranked Bulldogs as they prepare for their upcoming Southeastern Conference (SEC) opener.
Following a weather delay that turned halftime into a lengthy intermission, the Bulldogs rallied with strong performances from running backs Chauncey Bowens and Nate Frazier, each scoring two touchdowns. Frazier’s final touchdown, a one-yard rush with 5:39 remaining in the game, solidified Georgia’s 33rd consecutive victory on Dooley Field, extending their lead as the longest active streak in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS).
The game kicked off earlier than originally scheduled, starting at 2:30 PM due to anticipated thunderstorms. Just as the first half concluded, storms rolled in, prompting a delay as SEC rules mandated a 30-minute halt for lightning strikes within eight miles of the stadium.
As play resumed, Georgia dominated with a total offensive advantage of 421-196, efficiently balancing 231 passing yards and 190 rushing yards. However, the Bulldogs faced challenges with two fumbles that allowed Austin Peay to remain within striking distance.
Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton completed 26 of 34 passes for 227 yards, while the rushing trio of Frazier, Bowens, and Dwight Phillips, Jr. combined for 180 yards on 32 carries. Wide receiver Colbie Young led with a game-high seven receptions for 76 yards.
The Bulldogs initially struggled to capitalize on their offensive opportunities, with a fumble on their opening drive and a series of missed chances at the goal line. Despite this, Bowens managed to score his first collegiate touchdown, putting Georgia ahead 7-0 with 5:55 left in the first quarter.
Austin Peay responded with a field goal, narrowing the gap to 14-3 by 9:08 remaining in the half. As the Bulldogs fought to extend their lead, they were thwarted five times from the one-yard line before halftime.
After the long delay, Georgia’s defense quickly regained control, allowing the offense to drive 60 yards for another touchdown, increasing the lead to 21-3 with 10:54 left in the third quarter. This was capped by Bowens’ second rushing touchdown.
The performance of Georgia’s defense was pivotal, especially during a critical series where they denied Austin Peay on a long play sequence inside the ten-yard line. Linebackers CJ Allen and Raylen Wilson were standout performers, leading the defense with seven tackles each.
Looking ahead, the Bulldogs (2-0) will shift their focus to an awaited SEC opener against No. 22 Tennessee next Saturday. Georgia has a strong history against the Vols, having won the last eight matchups, including four consecutive games played in Knoxville.
As the excitement builds for their next game, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if the Bulldogs can maintain their winning streak in the SEC.
