Jenna Fischer, known for her role in “The Office,” takes the stage in the new play “Ashland Avenue,” which opens at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago on September 30, 2023. The play, written and directed by Fischer’s husband, Lee Kirk, has received an extension and will now run through October 12, 2023. Set in a fictional storefront along Ashland Avenue, the story explores themes of family, community, and the tension between personal dreams and familial expectations.

Lee Kirk’s inspiration for “Ashland Avenue” struck during a visit to Chicago for a friend’s play. Reflecting on his time in the city, where he lived for six years as a student and young adult, he realized how much he missed the sense of community that Chicago offers. He noted that living in Los Angeles, where car culture dominates, lacks the intimate connections found in Chicago.

A Chicago Love Letter

“Ashland Avenue” centers around a local celebrity, Pete, played by Francis Guinan, who is ready to pass his business, Pete’s TV and Video, to his daughter, Sam. However, Sam, portrayed by Fischer, dreams of becoming an author rather than continuing the family legacy in the audio-visual world. Kirk initially did not envision Fischer in the role but quickly recognized her suitability as the character’s voice developed.

Fischer, who hails from St. Louis, expressed her connection to Sam’s journey, having had to leave her hometown to pursue acting in Los Angeles. She reflected on her supportive upbringing, contrasting it with Sam’s more complex relationship with her father and their shared business. “It’s a scary thing to do. And so I can relate to her fear of leaving what she knows,” Fischer stated.

The setting of the play, while left somewhat ambiguous, is intended to resonate with audiences across Chicago’s diverse neighborhoods. Kirk envisions it taking place in West Town, near the intersection of Ashland and Division. The locale serves as a backdrop for the strong community ties that are central to the narrative.

Community and Engagement

As part of the promotional campaign for “Ashland Avenue,” Fischer’s presence has been felt throughout the city. Public transportation ads feature her character, sparking conversations among Chicagoans. She shared a humorous encounter with a passerby who recognized her from the ad, illustrating the community engagement the play is fostering.

Reflecting on the city’s reputation, Kirk emphasized that every city has its challenges, but he believes Chicago possesses a unique soul. Fischer echoed this sentiment, stating, “I love putting it in the spotlight through the lens of this play, which I think is a real love letter to the city.” The play aims to capture the heart of Chicago while remaining relatable to those unfamiliar with the city.

“Ashland Avenue” promises a rich exploration of familial ties, personal aspirations, and the vibrant community spirit that defines Chicago. Tickets and further information about the play are available through the Goodman Theatre’s official website.
