Guam High School’s cross country teams showcased remarkable resilience on March 11, 2024, navigating a challenging muddy course at John F. Kennedy High School during the second week of the ISA Cross Country League. Despite the slippery conditions, the Guam High Panthers emerged victorious, asserting their dominance against competitors including the JFK Islanders, Tiyan Titans, Southern Dolphins, Harvest Eagles, St. John’s Knights, and the Majesty Conquerors.

Caleb Steele Leads Boys Division

In the boys’ division, Caleb Steele powered through the mud to secure first place, finishing with a time of 17:49. He edged out his teammate Eldon Egbert, who finished just one second later at 17:50. The duo set a brisk pace from the start, feeding off each other’s energy as they navigated the tough terrain.

“The course was super muddy. There were some challenging turns, but I’m glad I had Eldon to push me throughout the race,” Steele remarked. He reflected on his strategy, noting, “Last week I went out too hard, and I knew in this meet that I needed to stay behind him in order to pace myself.” Steele also emphasized the importance of team spirit, stating, “I always appreciate the friendly competition with my teammates. It’s good to know that we’re all on the same team and all have the same goal.”

The Panthers are on a quest for their sixth consecutive cross-country title. Steele added, “We are definitely working hard to try and win all-island once again. I will always do whatever I can to do what’s best for the team and what my coach needs me to do.”

Naomi Spuler Shines in Girls Division

The girls’ division witnessed a similar display of excellence as Naomi Spuler, a sophomore and reigning All-Island champion, crossed the finish line first with a time of 22:23. Teammate Taliana Longoria followed closely, finishing in 22:59, ensuring the Panthers swept the top two spots once again.

“After watching the boys race and seeing how many people were slipping and falling, we just knew that we had to be smart,” Spuler commented. She highlighted her coach’s philosophy, stating, “My coach always says that the winner of the meet is not always the person who is the fastest but who runs the race the smartest.”

The strong performances from both the girls and boys divisions underscore the Panthers’ continued excellence in cross country. Under the leadership of legendary coach Joe Taitano, the team continues to set the standard for the sport across the island.

As the season progresses, the Panthers remain focused and dedicated to achieving their goals, embodying the spirit of teamwork and perseverance that defines their program.
